Time for voting! And other things!

Welcome back to the Library! Time to vote for what the next Story will be~

You get to vote for both your first and second choices; first choice will be weighted as 2 votes, second choice will be weighted as 1. Stories that are not selected this round will appear for vote again (just maybe not in the next vote, depending on how Into It people seem). Here are the options for our next Story!

After We Break: The Gods cannot come directly to the realm of mortals, so they use their humans in their service. Paladins, clerics, and even some priests are given the gods’ powers, filled with their divine grace, the spark of divinity seated next to their very soul. But the gods are at war, and with that war brings a terrible question: what happens to those chosen when their God dies? [Recommended Reading: Paladin’s Grace]
The Rainbow’s End: There’s no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but there is something better- The Rainbow’s End casino, where your every dream can be won with a toss of the dice! Run by leprechauns and other magical creatures, it’s a wonder of lights, music, and games, but once you’re in, the only way out is to gamble it all. And the House always wins. [Recommended Reading: Rosemary and Rue]
Blythe Hollow: The sleepy little town of Blythe Hollow has long been a tourist area for those interested in the story of its local Witch, and its yearly ritual to keep her ‘sleeping’ is always a big hit. However, it seems the spectacle had a purpose; this year something went wrong, and the Witch has risen, cutting off the town from the outside world and awakening monsters to torment the townsfolk. [Recommended Reading: ParaNorman; suggested by Joys!]

In addition, we are also looking to add a few people to our mod team! Ideally we’d like at least one more person to help with log/Story writing, but if you’d like to help more on the lists/AC side of things we could also use help there. Please leave us a comment on the mod contact indicating your interest, any prior experience, and what you’d be willing to help us take on.

We are always looking to improve, and we want this to be a game where everyone feels heard. Feel free to give feedback in this post, or, if you would prefer your comment be screened, hit us up at the mod contact. Thank you all again!

A feedback!!

Some feedback, now that we've had our first full proper story!

First, let me say thank you for hanging in there and doing everything you guys are doing, since I know things are EXTREMELY busy for both of you, and yet you're still managing to get stuff done. We love and appreciate you!

I feel like maybe three months was too long for one story, and that there might be benefits to looking at a one month to six weeks schedule instead. I have the sense that between the length of the plot and how short it actually is ICly (about a week?) that people were losing a lot of steam after about the midpoint.

A long story can be fun, but it also jams to a stop all CR people could be having with the characters we apped to play and play alongside, for the entire duration, unless they happen to be readers. If I wanted to RP with, say, just Nara'a (random player!!) and not Nero, I wouldn't have been able to do that at all since January, and it's now nearly April. That's a bit long too.

I want to suggest perhaps adding some clearer guidelines on what players are allowed to invent for themselves as Actors, so there isn't a sense that Star Actors get to triple-dip their perks because they threw something extra in in the background, instead of the already well-earned "double-dip" of species skill + star actor skill. Right now the gulf is potentially absolutely enormous, and not something easily overcome through picking up Library Skills alone.

I know it was tossed around in Discord a bit, but a little section on a log about what Star Actors and others are doing as a quick summary for people to catch up on would be great, as well as an OOC spot on whether or not people are okay with being recognized in their Actor Roles.

Woo, this got long! Thanks for reading it!

I agree with this! The Story did feel like it lagged a bit, particularly in the middle. I do think two weeks is a good amount of time between Story logs, but maybe we need like...one less log? So three rather than four.

For the skills stuff - I think some clearer guidelines from the beginning about what vampires and werewolves can and can't do right from the beginning would be a help. There was definitely some confusion and people accidentally inventing abilities & rules of which I was definitely guilty once, oops.

Alternative option - when there's a 'form' that potentially comes with a host of associated abilities, maybe for skill purposes those should be split up? Like, maybe 'turn into a basic vampire' is one skill, while 'have vampire mind control powers' is a seperate advanced skill. That leaves in the option for extra stuff, but if you want it you gotta spend more skill points for it.

Also yes to a summary / What Are The Star Actors doing OOC thread, that'd be great.

I think a good bit more conversation needs to happen about consent IC/OOC. This includes people using CW subject lines appropriately, as well as discussion about info/godmoding.

I understand that it's considered crusty and old to content warn in subject lines, but it's also just...good manners:
I have few squicks (look at my canon, lol) but it's always important in a community like RP to respect that others might have squicks and that a CW on a subject header is an easy courtesy.

There's also a bit more infomoding that needs to happen more formally, not just in plotting but, for example, with discovering Actors' true identities in a Story. It's not a listed Story Skill so I think some discussion should happen around that--if we even WANT that to be a skill, but if so, absolutely with explicit consent.

Outing a character without their consent is literally, uh, outing someone. It's kinda not cool? (It feels weird having to say 'hey man, outing is bad' in 2026 lol) It changes how a player might play their character, knowing they will have return blowback and gossip and I did see the word 'bullying' bandied about, (which..no thank you), on return. It shouldn't have to be said but the mun (god you can tell I'm old that I still use that term) should be in control of what is basically fourth walling their character.

Again I think a gamewide conversation about if we want characters discoverable is a great thing to come out of this! I would reserve that it be absolutely only with PRIOR consent. Finding out my character had been outed thirdhand and days later put me in a pretty crummy spot, since at that point it was impossible to retcon. We're all a community of friends here and everyone wants to have fun with their characters! We can all talk things out beforehand and not assume!

Speaking of OOC consent! I also suggest people weigh a bit more, even when they're working on NPCs, that if that NPC affects another player's background, that they talk with them and make sure everything's known and discussed and agreed to.

It might be fun to coming up with fantastic exciting backstories, but it can also screw over what someone else is doing and blindside them out of nowhere with something they don't want to interact with.

This is such a creative group! Having the different vampire clans with skills was a great way to make 'bad guys' without demonizing actual players (and vice versa for the werewolves).

I'm not averse to playing a bad guy/aggro/negative CR character, but I kind of want to know going into it and consciously CHOOSE to do it!

As someone who used to mod a similar game to this, I'd like to second the idea of having six week Story lengths. Roughly six weeks was more or less what worked for our version of the Stories, the sweet spot between too long and too short.

Going to second and third the notions that a “What’s Our Broad Plan” post for Star Actors would help plan with and around those plans tremendously.

I also am in favor of, uh, laying form powers on the table. Speaking only for myself, the first I realized that werewolves couldn’t normally do partial shifting was when I found out that doing so was the Scion’s plot skill in a PM to her player. Oops?

As someone who negotiated learning some Actor IDs in advance and enjoyed some of my character’s identities being an open secret, so much this on negotiation of the discoverability of Actor ID’s.

It can be a fun beat, and I like the option, but without that permission it’s beyond rude.

Whoops I hadn't realised there's discussion happening here! I'll go ahead and copy/paste my entire AC suggestion comment from the screened mod contact post just in case anyone else wants to chime in on it, considering how prevalent AC concerns have been in the Discord. It has already been acknowledged by a mod (whose comment can also be copy/pasted here at their discretion?), this is just so others can comment on the suggestion too should you want to.

Quite a few of us have experienced issues with the AC in one form or another and there was some chatter about it on the Discord: https://discord.com/channels/1431418031518519478/1431418390693810380/1477409235355697244 (and many other instances, that's just the first time I made this suggestion in the Discord and others chimed in)

Basically, I'm proposing simplifying AC by merging base AC and check-in AC so the new base AC will be 5 comments total, be it in one thread or multiple. And maybe check-in AC could really just be a check-in with no comment counting required? Or whatever you deem appropriate.

One issue I've seen mentioned multiple times from different players is the difficulty in getting 10 comments in a single thread, since they might reach a natural conclusion or (unfortunately) get dropped before that point or get tagged too slowly to qualify for AC. We're all active to the best of our abilities, and there isn't anyone "character squatting" considering the game is full of obscure and original characters no one else would swoop in to app anyway if they dropped, this is just a proposal to help lessen the AC stress and hopefully retain more players. Thank you for your time! The game you've created has been great fun and we all appreciate all the hard work you guys have put into it. c:
