TEST DRIVE MEME #2

Welcome to the Library

Those who are new awake in the stacks.

You’re not sure when you fell asleep, and the memories of the last things you were doing are hazy at best. But now you’re here, and all you can see is books in every direction, the bookshelves teetering high enough above you to reach to the sky.

A helpful sign points you in the direction of the main circulation desk, and even if you try to ignore it and go in any other direction, the desk is where you will find yourself. A figure sits behind the desk, not even looking up as they sort through books and other media; they look, to your character, to be the exact picture of what they expect a Librarian to be.

Trying to ask the Librarian a question will get them shushed, but they’ll point down a hallway to the side, leading to a kitchenette and what appears to be a dorm room, where they’ll find they’re not alone in this strange place. But once they’ve looked away, when they look back, the Librarian is gone.

The Lobby

Those who are already familiar with the Library will see the Lobby change for the second time. It’s not paper plate UFOs and metal walls this time. Instead there are cheerful garlands strung about, and a stack of books shaped into a Christmas tree taking pride of place. The Help Desk is closed, the ‘Back in 5’ sign once again a bald-faced lie, but there is a menorah sat behind in the window, conveniently just out of reach of anyone who tries to get it. The candles are lit in a… somewhat sporadic fashion, the correct order but with no rhyme or reason to what ‘night’ is being represented. Either time is strange here, whoever’s in charge of it doesn’t know what day it is either, or they simply don’t care. Or some mix of the three.

Those two particular winter holidays are not the only ones represented either; characters will find a smattering of decorations or festive accessories from a great number of holidays, from their own worlds and beyond. There is what looks like a cabinet with instructions to pick your fortune from one of the many drawers. For some reason, there are a number of what looks like a child’s toy ponies placed on and around the cabinet. There are also some posters declaring in bold, decidedly upsetting typeset: “THE GOD-EMPEROR WISHES YOU A FESTIVE SANGUINALIA!” complete with a picture of a certain Library resident in all his feathered, shining glory. (The poster is not remotely shiny, but there are helpful accent lines to show that he should be shining.) And, for some reason, there is also a giant straw goat in the garden now, surrounded by festive strings of lights. Please do not set it on fire.

The Kitchens

It seems the decorations are not the only thing in the holiday spirit. The kitchens, usually bereft of anything but the most basic foodstuffs, are now full to the brim with a variety of holiday foods. There is always a tureen with hot mulled wine and a try of sweet pastries near by it, there’s ham and latkes in the fridge to be heated up, jelly doughnuts, moon cakes, pies, and an assortment of other delicious things. If your character would expect to find a certain thing within the stash, they do, regardless of how niche it may be. Christmas chili? Of course there’s christmas chili!

Oh, and that mulled wine isn’t the only alcohol around either- champagne, sake, hard cider… again, anything anyone might expect to find. Just try not to overdo it too much, alright? Everyone still has to sleep in the same room, and the Assistants aren’t going to show up to hold your hair back.

Crafts and More

What good are holidays without crafts? The Maker’s Space has been specially supplied with anything you might need to make your festive crafts- this includes everything you’d need for a gingerbread construction! (You’d think this would be in the kitchen, but don’t kid yourself- those things are not for eating.) There’s strips of colorful paper rings and instructions on how to make your own, little things of clay and paint and directions on how to craft your own dreidel, ’stained glass’ paper lanterns, and more. Oh, and glitter. Obviously there is a lot of glitter available.

There are also snow globe kits, mostly generic winter themes- trees, presents, and the like. Strangely enough, however, when they’re complete and shaken, they’ll show a memory from the person who shook it- a memory of a holiday, or snow, or generally something that invokes the feeling of the season- light, and hope, and togetherness. It’s fragmented, almost stop-motion in between the falling bits of ‘snow,’ but once it has settled the normal, basic scene inside returns.

Oh, great, a civilian. Riot Purple's day just gets better and better. But at least this now gives her some proper direction - protecting innocents is what Magica Riot does.

"Hey, kid, get behind me," she says.

Riot Purple is dressed head to toe in that color, with a studded biker-ass leather jacket, studs on the knuckles on her leather gloves, and tall gothic boots with steel toes. She wields a keytar on a strap over her shoulder as if it's a machine gun. Somehow, it looks confident rather than ridiculous.

"Riot Purple," she says. "Punk rocker and monster-slaying magical girl."

Is there... danger? Kel immediately tenses up, he had enough time to get used to random things 'happening' and creatures attacking him in the world he was before so at least he knows how to immediately get into a defensive position and ready himself for combat but... nothing. The only 'danger' so far has been corridors and corridors constantly bringing him back to the same spot but what if that was all...

"Huh... hi? I'm not a kid."

He's seventeen, miss. That being said, he finds the leather-y style pretty much cool and awesome, he just never really saw the purple girl before. But now that he found someone maybe-

"Ouch!" Marigold hits. She bites his arm so the teen has to let her go and Kel lets out a pained hiss while holding his arm as the cat hops behind the magical girl. "What's the big idea, girl? We're in this together!"

Yes, he's pouting toward a cat. A sigh before he brings his attention to the stranger, offering his hand in her direction.

"Kel. If we do fancy introductions, I'm Kelsey Armando Alvarez. Never killed monsters but I did punch a couple of them before."

Having been a teenager who insists she’s not a kid very recently, Claire bites back sure you’re not, kid and just nods.

“Nothing’s jumped me yet but this place is humming with magic, and not a leitmotif from the Maidensong either,” she says. “A little caution never hurt anyone.”

She then notices a new friend rubbing up against her. “…cute. What’s your friend’s name?”

H-hey! Seventeen and almost eighteen is a lot, okay? He seems satisfied with the nod as he pays attention to her. Right, she seems to know what's happening, it's better than blindly wandering around, right?

"I'm not sure what the maidensong is, but I can't tell this place is magical to some degree. I walked around for a bit and even if I didn't have random plant creatures attack me nor animals go feral around the place or... I dunno, books try to eat me? This place seems to trap us here. Probably. I keep wandering back to the same place no matter how hard I try to go away from it."

He can be cautious, really. it's just... "Regardless of what this library is, I need to go back to my friends. We all live in the treehouse area, if you're familiar with the city." Oh, he still thinks it's just his old place being weird and scary...

"Ah, she's... Marigold. She's actually my roommate's cat but I guess we're in this together now. She is not my biggest fan. But, hey, she's orange! Like me!" He's trying to sound chipper, at least.

"I'm familiar with a city we call The City. What's your branch of Starlight doing if it's crawling with that many monsters? Do you know what your local magical girl team's called?"

The idea that this wasn't Earth, or Kel's Earth, simply hadn't occurred to Riot Purple. She's moving with purpose through the Stacks, peeking around corners before advancing out of the cover of the bookshelves.

"...The Maidensong's what gives magical girls their powers," she says. "Not everyone hears it as song, but the band that recruited me does. Magica Riot. I guess we're not that big out of Portland."

The fudge is she even talking about? He's used to people being absolutely random, though, especially when 'new' so before dropping the whole 'a dream world of sorts kidnapped us' speech he's just rolling with what she seems to believe for now.

"Oh, we're kind of a small suburb, not enough people to have a magical girls team with us. They got me, my pink haired friend with a nail bat and Captain spaceboy though. We make it work. Who knows, maybe someday we will promoted magical girls, even if I don't think that kind of style would look good on me with my long hairy legs on display."

It's a bunch of bullcrap but hey- he's trying to chitchat without alarming the girl and empty talks do help calm his nerves too. Both the cat and Kel follow her for now, though, with Marigold mostly hiding behind her legs like Kel is the biggest danger for her. Of course he is, can you believe this human once forgot to clean her litterbox for a whole day and sometimes he doesn't pick her favorite cat food brand? Clearly a villain.

"Never heard it, but maybe powers come in different forms? And you said band? Like, music band? I'm also living far away from Portland so..."

"Your friend sounds like she'd fit right in. We have Red, Yellow, Blue, Green and Me, we're in the market for a Pink," Claire says lightly. "How does she feel about singing in public and punk rock/riot girl?"

And she laughs, and sings a strain of an example: "Hey don't look so surprised, you spent your whole damn li~ife training me to take it ~ making me bele~eive, that I was worthless ~ push me to my limits then berate me when I break shit..."

Then she catches the bit about not being from Portland, stops, reevaluates.

"...Kel, I have what may be bad news for you."
